So Fun!
playing with layers & seeing connections
Hello my friends!
What’s not to love about a torn bit of my mother-in-law’s embroidery paired with spent 60th birthday flowers floating down the river?
Or a double exposed ravine hanging out with my grandmother’s travel case for ‘intimates’, layered with my mother-in-law’s wedding night nightie?
The more time I spend near the Ottauquechee River, the easier it is to play with layers, whether physical or emotional, ancient or very new. Perhaps it’s the constancy of a river’s flow, or the reality of finally feeling settled.1
As an antidote to letting go of images in my archive,2 I spend time seeing connections between the ones I love most and noticing how much more interesting they are when in conversation across space and time. So fun!
May you find connection and a little fun in the coming week.
With joy and gratitude for you being you,
Lyn
Oh, and what did you do with your grandmother’s or mother’s nighties - - They used to be made of the most lovely materials?
Also, do you know about the Cultivating Place podcast? It’s all about natural history and the human impulse to garden. In preparation for celebrating 10 years of sharing wisdom, the founder, Jennifer Jewell is hosting a 100 Days project between October 31 and February 7.
For that project, I’m working on my memoir in stitches. Check out this ‘double exposure’ of my wedding dress outlined on my actual wedding dress. Love that 1992 me gets to hang out with ancestors from centuries ago. Talk about connecting across time and space. So fun!3
In October 2024 we moved from our large house in New Hampshire where we raised our children to a three bedroom condo in Vermont.
If you haven’t been following 13 Tons recently, you may want to catch up on my “Big Edit” project. Check out Curating A Life - The Big Edit from a few weeks ago.
Yes - - Soooo Fun. I’ve repeated that phrase quite a bit here because, well, these things are fun. It may be a boring and overused word, but it works. I like that fun is what it is - - not overly dramatic, like amazing, or fantastic, and definitely more upbeat than OK or fine.
Anyway, since turning 60 I’ve decided to find and celebrate the fun where and when I can. I hope some of my fun makes you smile.
Take care, my friend, wherever you are.

Richly crafted in words and images.
First Snow and Lily Swimming are great composites, Lyn!
