Hello Reader,
Why do you care, people ask (including some of you), about composting in New York City (Good Morning, Good People)?
Because, I tell them, when I look at the kaleidoscope of texture, shape and color in the bin (or bucket), I see the universe.1
Each banana a reminder of those who have devoted their lives to growing, transporting or making that fruit available to me.
Each flower an invitation to consider the energy embodied in the soil from which it came.
Each onion peel a metaphor for the layers in each of our lives.
Because, I tell them, each batch of detritus inspires awe. It’s that simple.
…each image, a reminder of the power of regeneration, transformation and renewal…
As with the soil and plants, I constantly compost different parts of my life and from that processing of this and that, understanding and new parts of myself emerge.
What really inspires me about what’s happening in New York City is that Community Composting is a shared communion with the natural world and with each person involved, a connection often missing in our lives.
I wonder: When will we start seeing these seemingly mundane aspects of our lives not as ‘stuff to be managed,’ but as opportunities for slowing down, seeing our daily connection to the natural world through our food, and finding meaning in all that we do every day?
Why do I care about composting?
Because I do. It’s spiritual for me.
Sending color, light and a bit of awe to each of you during this season of dormancy and flourishing. Perhaps finding meaning in the mundane will offer balance and peace.
As always, thank you for sharing your time and this place with me.
With cheers and gratitude for you being you,
Lyn

And remember to comment with the button below rather than hitting reply. If you choose the latter, I’ll never see any of your delightful words.
All the images in this post were created between November 30 and December 12 in our compost pile behind our garage. While I don’t compost most of our food waste, I can’t resist adding various bits from the kitchen. It’s a compulsion driven by curiosity. What wonder will appear next when I mix a bit of this and that and hang out with it for a while?
